Birders will delight in being at Rusinga watching hammerkops on the sweeping lawns and the rare double-toothed barbet. Life at the Lodge revolves around the lake and the island's birds - from stately fish eagles to tiny iridescent sunbirds and arrow-fast kingfishers, to name but a few of the 270 species of local and migratory birds. The nearby Bird Islands, a short boat ride from the lodge, are one of the most important breeding sites for water birds on Lake Victoria with birds nesting in large colonies above otters and monitor lizards around the rocks. Fishermen will be in their element fishing from specially outfitted boats or from the jetty. The lake's warm waters are ideal for active watersports while its spacious grounds offer a safe environment for children to release their energy.

House of Waine Karen, Nairobi

Nairobi’s leading boutique hotel, The House of Waine lies in Nairobi’s prestigious forested suburb of Karen.  It is situated on 2.5 acres that blends the elegance of gracious living with the spirit of modern Africa in an exclusive and serene setting. There are 11 bedrooms that are all individually styled as well as conference facilities and a swimming pool.  There is good access to the city, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Wilson Airport.

The aim is to provide guests with an experience that exceeds all their expectations of city hotels and is punctuated by personalised, friendly and excellent service and cuisine in beautiful surroundings.

As a recently renovated and converted house on the outskirts of Nairobi, House of Waine still retains much of the charm of a family home.  Little has been done to change the structure of the house and so guests are assured of a relaxed and informal atmosphere where they can be free to do as much or as little as they like.  That is not to say though that the House is lacking in the amenities present in any city hotel.  They can still find a mini bar in each room as well as direct dial telephones, TVs with satellite and local channels as well as tea and coffee-making facilities with fresh flowers and pastries delivered daily to the room.

As with any family home where no two rooms are alike, so it is with House of Waine where all of the rooms are individually styled and then given a name to reflect their central design theme or feature.

The peace and quiet of Karen takes centre stage in the property where the only noise one will usually hear will the be the sound of the local birdlife or at the very most the occasional car going by.  Upon entering the gates one is transported to another place, one with a gentler, quieter pace, a private retreat where you can be inspired to do absolutely nothing.  That’s life at House of Waine, where they like to do things a little bit differently.

Kilalinda Near Tsavo East National Park
www.kilalinda.com
Also see Travel Africa Magazine

Kilalinda is a place of constant little surprises, of subtle, stirring revelations. Located on the edge of Tsavo East in a private conservancy, in the welcoming shadow of the Yatta Plateau, the lodge sits on a sandy promontory overlooking the Athi River, a little drop of luxury in the harsh wilds of Tsavo.  On a clear day, Kilimanjaro can be seen to the south.

The lodge is surrounded by well-tended and beautiful gardens that contrast with the arid Tsavo countryside

This is hippo and crocodile country, but in this dry land it's an oasis for virtually every species in Tsavo and the only interruptions are the sparkling procession of starlings, sunbirds, weavers and hornbill birds.  The bird life is as varied as the landscape, from the conspicuous flocks of golden-breasted starlings around most of the park to the dull, skulking evergreen forest warbler in the Chyulu hills. Tsavo is home the Somali ostrich in Tsavo East and the Hartlaub's bustard. Tsavo lies on one of the main migration routes for northern hemisphere birds.

Accommodation consists of six well spaced out cottages. Each cottage has an individual character with olive wood pillars, giant four poster beds, cushion laden sofas and local handmade tiles in the bathrooms, shingled roofs, private verandas built so as to make maximum use of the cool breeze that blows up and down the river during the different seasons.  The Twiga suite even has its own bar, jacuzzi and plunge pool, The cottages are located along the river giving each room its own view and sandy beach with a hammock for whiling away the afternoon.

The main social area consists of a generous dining room with sufficient space for sixteen people and an open lounge and bar with stunning views of the river and the pool.

Kilalinda takes great pride in providing first class cuisine.  Most of the fresh vegetables are grown on a nearby farm.  All the bread, cakes and pastas are homemade.  The emphasis is on Italian cuisine – what a feast awaits you!  Lunches may be served on the poolside lawn or on a sandy patio overlooking the river or there are the sunrise breakfasts and sundowners on a panoramic platform nestled high in the boughs of a giant baobab tree overlooking the game drinking at the dam.

Kiangazi House Lake Naivasha
www.oserianwildlife.com

Kiangazi House is a delightful country house that is located in the 3,000-acre Oserian Game Corridor and overlooks Oloidien Bay and part of Lake Naivasha. Here one feels the awe inspiring Rift Valley at first hand.  Kiangazi has three luxurious bedrooms in the main building and has just completed two additional garden cottages.   Swimming pool and tennis court.

Chui Lodge and Kiangazi are a 10-minute drive apart.  The activities at both properties are the same, with the exception of Kiangazi having a tennis court.   The beauty of both lodges is that you can combine the Rift Valley and lakes experience with seeing game as well.

Lake Naivasha is a birdwatchers fantasy. There are over 450 species in the immediate area including the highland escarpments, which surround the lake to the south and west. From October to March the resident bird population is generously supplemented by palaearctic migrants. On the water pelicans and cormorants are numerically superior but pride of place must go to the African Fish Eagle whose haunting call remains as significant to lake visitors as does the roar of a lion in the parks.

Sala's Camp Masai Mara

The 14 bedded Sala’s Camp overlooks the Sand River with views towards Tanzania and the Serengeti. It lies adjacent to the designated Rhino conservation area

Sala’s Camp is owned and managed by experienced safari professionals Mikey and Tanya Carr-Hartley. They have been operating luxury mobile safaris in East Africa for the last twelve years. Sala’s Camp was previously a mobile camp and 2006 is the first season it is open as a semi-permanent camp.

During the Great Wildebeest Migration in the months of early July to end October, Sala’s Camp is ideally located since many of the animals move back and forth from the Serengeti in search of lush grasslands in the Mara. The game viewing during this time is exceptional with dramatic river crossings and attendant predators.
